Project objectives
As the operator of the university buildings and therefore the entity responsible for the operating costs, the University of Bern has a strong intrinsic interest in ensuring that its space resources are used efficiently. Based on the data currently available, only limited conclusions can be drawn about the actual utilisation of the rooms used by the university and its members. The project aims to change this so that, for example, it is not only known whether rooms are occupied, but also how many people are in the rooms.
The findings will then be used to optimise the allocation and occupancy of rooms, thereby making utilisation more efficient. It should also be possible to answer questions about users per building and area when drawing up catering strategies, the sub-portfolio strategy (AGG), cleaning procedures, etc.
Measuring the utilisation of laboratory facilities, classrooms, study spaces, office space and meeting rooms is therefore relevant for the university – as well as for policymakers.
As part of the project study, the following four room categories were defined, each of which will be pursued in a sub-project:
- Classrooms
- Laboratories
- Study spaces (University Library of Bern)
- Workplaces and meeting rooms
The four sub-projects will be carried out in a serial process. More detailed information on the individual sub-projects can be found here.
